Composite and glass ionomer cement fillings, or tooth-coloured fillings, are a natural-looking option for more extensive tooth restorations. These are frequently used and can be a good alternative to amalgam (silver) fillings in some cases.

In the case that a cavity is too large for a tooth-coloured filling to sufficiently restore the tooth to full function, alternatives such as inlays and onlays may be a better solution. The difference between these options and tooth coloured fillings is the way in which a tooth is prepared and the material used. Inlays and onlays can be made from gold, porcelain, ceramic or composite material and are much stronger than tooth coloured fillings.
