Finding relief from toothache
A toothache is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong with your teeth or gums. While mild discomfort can sometimes be caused by temporary irritation, persistent or severe tooth pain often signals an underlying dental issue that requires professional attention.
Book an emergency dental appointment
If you are experiencing tooth pain, please call Alma Dental Surgery as soon as possible to book an appointment. Please let our friendly receptionist know that you require an emergency appointment, so we can see you promptly and provide relief.
Common causes of toothache
Toothaches can occur for many reasons, including:
- Tooth decay or cavities
- Cracked or damaged teeth
- Gum disease
- Dental abscess or infection
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- A piece of food stuck between teeth or under the gum line

Check for simple causes
Before assuming the worst, check to see if something as simple as food debris is causing the discomfort. Pass dental floss gently between the affected teeth and rinse with warm water to remove any trapped particles.

Managing pain and swelling at home
While you wait for your appointment:
- Take over-the-counter pain relief (preferably one that contains an anti-inflammatory ingredient) to help manage swelling and discomfort.
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to reduce bacteria and soothe irritation.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to help minimise swelling.
Important note: Do not apply painkillers directly to the tooth or gums, as this can cause chemical burns to the tissue.
When to seek urgent dental care
Seek immediate dental attention if you experience:
- Severe, throbbing pain that does not subside
- Swelling in your face or jaw
- Signs of infection, such as fever, pus, or a bad taste in the mouth
- Difficulty opening your mouth or swallowing
Smile stronger by acting now
Delaying treatment for a toothache can allow the problem to worsen, potentially leading to infection, tooth loss, or the need for more complex procedures. Early intervention helps preserve your natural teeth and maintain your oral health.
