Sedation Dentistry
A calmer, more comfortable dental experience
Dental anxiety is real—and more common than many people realise. We appreciate that you may feel extremely nervous about a specific procedure, possibly because of previous negative experiences, or simply find dental visits overwhelming. In such situations, the caring team at Alma Dental may suggest sedation dentistry so you can feel more relaxed and at ease while achieving important oral health goals.
We optimise your treatment to reduce stress and maximise comfort, every time you visit. With a range of sedation options tailored to your needs, you can feel confident that your time with us will be a good experience. That’s why more people choose Alma Dental, for comfortable, effective care that never compromises on safety or quality.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses medications to help patients relax during dental procedures. It’s sometimes called “sleep dentistry,” although most forms of sedation don’t actually cause full sleep. Instead, you remain conscious but deeply calm, with reduced awareness of discomfort or anxiety.
Sedation can be used for a variety of reasons, including:
- Dental anxiety or phobia
- A low pain threshold
- Sensitive teeth or gums
- Difficulty sitting still for long periods
- A strong gag reflex
- Complex or lengthy dental treatments

Common comfort options we offer during treatment
We offer several types of numbing and sedation, and the most appropriate option for you will be determined after a thorough assessment during your initial consultation. Your safety, medical history, and level of anxiety are all carefully considered.
Used in almost all routine dental procedures, local anaesthetic is administered via injection to numb the specific area being treated. You’ll be awake and alert but won’t feel pain in the numbed area.
In some cases, oral medication may be prescribed before your appointment to help reduce anxiety. This is taken under supervision and is generally reserved for less complex procedures or mild cases of dental fear.
For patients with severe anxiety, extensive dental work, or special medical needs, we may recommend treatment under IV sedation—performed by a specialist in-chair. We work closely with trusted dental anaesthetists whenever it’s needed, to ensure your comfort and peace of mind every step of the way.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. When administered by trained professionals and tailored to your health needs, dental sedation is safe and effective. Before any sedation is offered, we will:
- Review your medical and dental history
- Assess any medications or allergies
- Explain the process, benefits, and potential side effects
- Answer all your questions and obtain informed consent
- Your wellbeing is our top priority at every step
How we do sedation dentistry
Feeling nervous is normal—but knowing what to expect can make all the difference. We’ll walk you through your sedation options in plain language, so you feel informed, calm, and confident at every stage.
Some sedation types, like local anesthetic, we let you drive yourself home. Others—like oral or IV sedation—require someone to come with you. Either way, we’ll give you clear, personalised instructions to help you prepare and recover with ease and peace of mind.
