What to do if your crown falls off

Losing a dental crown or temporary crown can be unsettling, especially if the tooth underneath is exposed. While this situation is usually not life-threatening, it can cause discomfort and should be treated promptly to prevent further damage.

Step 1: Keep the crown safe

If your crown falls off, retrieve it immediately and store it in a clean container or sealed plastic bag. Bring it with you to your dental appointment, as we may be able to clean and re-cement it if it is still in good condition.

Step 2: Avoid DIY repairs

Do not attempt to glue the crown back in place using superglue or other adhesives. These substances can damage your tooth, the crown, and surrounding tissues, and may make professional repair more difficult.

Step 3: Protect the exposed tooth

An uncovered tooth can be sensitive to hot, cold, and pressure. To reduce discomfort until you see us:

  • Apply a small amount of oil of cloves (available at most pharmacies) to the exposed tooth using a cotton swab to help temporarily ease sensitivity.
  • Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
  • Stick to softer foods and avoid anything sticky, hard, or crunchy.

Step 4: Book a dental appointment quickly

Even if you are not experiencing pain, a lost crown should be addressed promptly. Without its protective covering, the tooth underneath is more vulnerable to decay, wear, or breakage.

When to seek emergency care

  • If you are in severe pain or discomfort.
  • If the tooth has broken or there is visible swelling.
  • If the crown loss has left sharp edges that could cut your tongue or cheek.
  • In these cases, request an emergency dental appointment right away.

Why timely action matters

Crowns are custom-made to fit precisely over your tooth. If left off for too long, your tooth or gums may shift, making it harder—or even impossible—to reattach the original crown. Acting quickly can save you time, money, and discomfort.

Keeping your crown safe and visiting us promptly often means we can simply clean and reattach it, saving you from needing a brand-new restoration. So if your crown comes off, contact our team for gentle, efficient care to keep your smile comfortable, functional, and long-lasting.

Call us on (08) 9227 6468 for prompt advice and emergency care. We can guide you over the phone and help you manage the situation until you’re able to see us in person.
