Lost a tooth? Don’t lose time

A knocked-out tooth is a serious dental emergency that requires immediate attention. Acting quickly can greatly increase the chances of saving your tooth and restoring it to its original position.

Keep in mind that if there is heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, loss of consciousness, or any other serious injury, call 000 immediately. If none of these apply, follow the steps below without delay.

Tooth Knocked Out
Step 1: Stay calm and act fast

Your tooth has the best chance of being saved if it is treated within 30 minutes to 1 hour after the accident. Take a deep breath and focus on the next steps.

Step 2: Handle the tooth correctly

  • Always pick up the tooth by the crown (the white chewing surface), not the root.
  • Avoid touching or scrubbing the root as it contains delicate fibres essential for reattachment.

Step 3: Clean the tooth gently

  • Rinse the tooth under cold running water for a few seconds to remove dirt or debris.
  • Don’t scrub or use soap or chemicals on the tooth.
  • Do not remove any attached tissue fragments.

Step 4: Reinsert the tooth if possible

  • If you feel confident, gently place the tooth back into its socket.
  • Make sure it is facing the correct way.
  • Hold it in place by gently biting down on a clean cloth or gauze.

Step 5: Store the tooth safely (if you can’t reinsert it)

If reinsertion isn’t possible or you’re unsure:

  • Place the tooth in a small, clean container.
  • Cover it with cold milk, lightly salted water, or your own saliva.
  • Avoid storing it in plain water for long periods, as this can damage the cells needed for healing.

Step 6: Seek immediate dental care

  • Contact Alma Dental Surgery right away.
  • If we are closed, visit an after-hours emergency dentist as soon as possible.
  • The faster you receive professional care, the higher the chances of successfully saving the tooth.

What if my tooth is partially knocked out?

A partially dislodged tooth (subluxation) is also a dental emergency.

  • Avoid touching or wiggling the tooth.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed.
  • Contact us immediately for an urgent appointment.

Extra first aid tips for knocked-out teeth

  • Keep the patient still and calm—avoid strenuous activity.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth to reduce swelling.
  • If there’s bleeding, bite down gently on gauze to help control it.

Why immediate treatment matters

A knocked-out tooth can often be saved if handled correctly and treated promptly. Appropriate quick action reduces the need for artificial replacements and helps preserve your natural smile.
