If you or a loved one is experiencing a dental emergency, the best thing to do is contact our team as soon as possible. Quick action can significantly reduce the risk of further damage and may avoid the need for more extensive treatment later on.

When can I be seen?

Your first step is to call us. You’ll be surprised how quickly we can fit you in.

We do our best to accommodate emergency appointments as soon as possible—often on the same day. We keep space in our schedule, usually around midday, to help patients in urgent need. While we’ll always try to find a time that works for you, flexibility may occasionally be limited. We appreciate your understanding and promise to treat every patient with fairness, care, and respect.

Dental emergencies we often treat

Some dental emergencies can be avoided with regular check-ups. Others happen suddenly—a sharp pain, a chipped tooth, a swollen cheek. Whatever the cause, our team is here to offer clear advice, gentle care, and support that puts your wellbeing first.

We often help our patients with:

  • Toothache or severe dental pain
  • Dental abscess or facial swelling
  • Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • Partially dislodged or loose tooth
  • Broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Injury to lips, cheeks, or gums
  • Objects stuck between teeth causing pain or trauma

Not sure if your concern is urgent? Give us a call. We’ll talk through your symptoms and guide you toward the right next step—with calm, compassionate care.

Dental first aid tips

While you’re waiting to see us, there are simple steps you can take to ease discomfort and protect the affected area. At Alma Dental Surgery, we believe in empowering you with clear, compassionate advice—so you can feel more in control, even in stressful moments.

Here’s what to do in some common scenarios:

Toothache or swelling

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief (as advised by your GP or pharmacist)
  • Avoid chewing on the affected side
  • Apply a cold compress if swelling is present

Knocked-out tooth

  • Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root)
  • Gently rinse with water—do not scrub
  • If possible, reposition the tooth in the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth
  • If not, store it in milk or saline and bring it to your appointment
  • See a dentist within 30–60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth

Broken or chipped tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Keep any broken pieces in milk
  • Apply a cold compress if swelling occurs
  • Avoid biting on the affected side

Lost filling or crown

  • Keep the area clean
  • If a crown has come off, keep it safe and bring it with you
  • You can use temporary dental cement from a pharmacy if needed

Dental check-up

Sometimes you’ll need more urgent help than we can provide. If you have any concerns about infection, breathing difficulty, fever, or facial swelling that spreads, seek immediate medical attention or call an ambulance. In rare cases, dental infections can become serious if left untreated.

Can dental emergencies be prevented?

Some emergencies—like accidents—can’t be avoided. But regular dental check-ups, excellent oral hygiene, and wearing a custom mouthguard during sports can significantly reduce your risk of dental trauma or infection. We’re here to help you plan ahead and protect your smile.
