In the past, this wasn’t possible
The era of metal
Fillings were traditionally used to restore areas of teeth damaged by decay or wear. The earliest materials included gold or silver-coloured amalgam, durable, but highly visible. These metallic fillings stood out sharply against natural enamel, making them quite noticeable in the mouth.
The arrival of tooth-coloured fillings and crowns
The introduction of tooth-coloured porcelain and, later, composite resins marked an exciting shift in dentistry. For the first time, it was possible to create fillings, veneers, and crowns that looked more like natural teeth, ushering in the age of cosmetic dentistry.
Early “tooth-coloured” materials still fell short
Although labelled “tooth-coloured,” early materials often lacked the translucency and natural texture of real enamel. They tended to appear flat or opaque—an improvement over metal, but still a far cry from a seamless, natural-looking result.
Enamel sacrificed for porcelain restorations
In the past, placing porcelain crowns and veneers often required significant enamel removal. Teeth had to be trimmed down—sometimes quite aggressively—to make room for the porcelain and the cement used to bond them. Unfortunately, this irreversible loss of enamel weakened the teeth and increased the risk of future decay.

We use high-definition scanners to create detailed 3D images of your teeth—no gooey impression trays required. This allows for highly accurate restorations and a more comfortable experience.
Today’s ceramics combine strength with aesthetics. They mimic the natural translucency and shade of enamel so well, it’s often hard to tell them apart from real teeth.
