Teen Orthodontic Treatment
Creating a healthier, more harmonious smile
The patient’s concerns and treatment goals
This teenage patient attended Alma Dental Surgery with concerns about the alignment of her teeth.
Her upper teeth showed noticeable crowding and irregular positioning, including a significantly displaced canine that sat behind the neighbouring teeth rather than following the natural curve of the dental arch.
Crowding and irregular tooth positioning were also affecting the overall harmony of her smile.
The goal of treatment was to gradually bring the displaced tooth into a more appropriate position while improving the alignment of both the upper and lower arches.
A closer look at her tooth alignment
A thorough orthodontic assessment was carried out to evaluate the position and alignment of the patient’s teeth and determine the most suitable treatment approach.
One of the most noticeable concerns was the position of tooth #11, which was significantly displaced behind the neighbouring teeth #10 and #12. This created a visible disruption to the natural alignment of the upper arch.
Crowding and irregular positioning were also present across the upper and lower teeth, making comprehensive orthodontic treatment necessary to improve overall arch alignment.
Because orthodontic treatment involves gradually moving teeth over time, careful planning was required to guide each tooth into an improved position while working towards greater harmony across both arches.
Planning the journey to a more aligned smile
Following the assessment and discussion of suitable treatment options, comprehensive orthodontic treatment with fixed braces was recommended.
The treatment involved:
- Upper and lower fixed braces
- Gradual movement of the significantly displaced canine into alignment
- Improvement of crowding and irregular tooth positioning
- Alignment of both the upper and lower arches
- Ongoing monitoring and adjustments throughout treatment
Treatment commenced in April 2017 and was completed in August 2018, taking approximately 1 year and 4 months.
The treatment plan prioritised structural predictability and cohesive integration.
Bringing a significantly displaced canine into alignment
One of the most remarkable changes throughout treatment was the movement of tooth #11.
Initially positioned behind the neighbouring teeth #10 and #12, the canine required gradual orthodontic movement to bring it forward and into a more harmonious position within the upper arch.
Fixed braces applied carefully controlled forces over time, progressively guiding the tooth towards its intended position.
At the same time, the remaining teeth in both the upper and lower arches were gradually aligned to improve the overall arrangement and harmony of the smile.
Regular reviews and adjustments allowed the progress of treatment to be carefully monitored throughout the orthodontic journey.
The difference 16 months can make
After approximately 16 months of orthodontic treatment, there was a noticeable improvement in the alignment of both the upper and lower arches.
The significantly displaced canine had been brought into alignment, transforming the appearance and continuity of the upper dental arch.
The treatment also improved the overall positioning of the remaining teeth, creating a more even and harmonious arrangement across both arches.
This case demonstrates how comprehensive teen orthodontic treatment can gradually address significant tooth displacement and crowding while improving overall dental alignment.
Why the teenage years can be an important time for orthodontic care
The teenage years can be an important time to assess tooth alignment and orthodontic development.
As the teeth and jaws continue to develop, orthodontic treatment may help address concerns such as crowding, irregular tooth positioning and significant displacement.
Every orthodontic treatment plan is different. The most suitable approach depends on factors including the patient’s oral health, stage of dental development, tooth positioning, bite and individual treatment goals.
At Alma Dental Surgery, orthodontic treatment recommendations are tailored to each patient following a comprehensive assessment and discussion of their individual needs.
* Treatment outcomes vary depending on individual oral health, clinical conditions, treatment needs and biological response. A comprehensive assessment by a qualified dental professional is required to determine suitable treatment options.
